Does Humana Cover Life Alert?

  • Some Humana Medicare Advantage plans cover medical alert systems similar to Life Alert. One system called Philips Lifeline is an extra benefit of many Humana Medicare plans.

Many older adults utilize medical alert systems like Life Alert. These devices, which are generally worn around the neck, allow the user to signal for help in the event of a fall or other emergency, and they help enable seniors to more safely live independently and age in place at home.

A Humana Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) plan can cover benefits Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn't cover, though plans that cover a medical alert system similar to Life Alert may not be available in your area. It's important to compare plans from where you live so you can see what benefits and services are available.

Does Humana Cover Medical Life Alert?

While some Humana Medicare plans may not cover the Life Alert brand of medical alert systems, they may cover another brand of personal emergency response systems called Philips Lifeline.

Philips Lifeline actually has the greatest number of subscribers of any medical alert system on the market, even more than Life Alert.

The Philips Lifeline is a remote monitoring system that can detect a fall and automatically dispatch a call to a family member, friend, neighbor or emergency service and send help on the way. If the fall is not detected or if another type of emergency occurs, users also have the option of pressing a button to dispatch the call.

How Is the Philips Lifeline Covered by Humana?

If your Humana Medicare Advantage plan covers the Philips Lifeline, it will be covered in full with no cost to you for either the product itself or its membership.

“We believe our work with Philips will help offer our members and their caregivers more in-home support and help them to stay engaged and focused on prevention,” said Humana Home Business Segment President Susan Diamond in a press release announcing the partnership.

How Do I Sign Up for the Humana Lifeline Program?

First, you must be enrolled in a Humana Medicare Advantage plan that includes a Philips Lifeline benefit. If you are already enrolled in a Humana plan, call the phone number on your plan ID card to speak to a representative from Humana and inquire about your Philips Lifeline coverage.

If you are not yet enrolled in a Humana plan, contact a licensed insurance agent to compare the Humana Medicare Advantage plans available in your area that cover medical alert systems.

Once you are enrolled in a Humana plan, you can confirm your Philips Lifeline eligibility and establish your account. Ideal candidates for a Philips Lifeline are high-risk individuals who are living independently who stand to gain some peace of mind for themselves and their loved ones.
