While Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t typically cover any of the costs for eyeglasses or routine vision care, most Humana Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, cover vision care, eyeglasses and contacts. And this extra coverage is one reason over 4.3 million Medicare beneficiaries get their Medicare coverage from a Humana Medicare Advantage plan in 2021.1

How Do Humana Medicare Advantage Plans Work?

Medicare Advantage plans work much like the private health insurance plans you’re probably accustomed to getting through an employer or from the marketplace. These plans often come in the form of an HMO or PPO plan and use similar cost structures such as premiums, deductibles, coinsurance and copayments.

Depending on the type of Humana Medicare Advantage plan you choose, you may have a primary care doctor and a network of vision providers from which to choose.

Humana Medicare Advantage plans include all of the same benefits found in Original Medicare along with some extra coverage for things not included in Original Medicare. In addition to vision coverage, these extra perks can include coverage of prescription drugs, vision care, Medicare dental coverage, memberships to fitness programs and more.

If you don’t sign up at that time, you may be able to sign up for a Humana Medicare plan during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which is also often called the fall Medicare Open Enrollment Period. Fall Medicare Open Enrollment takes place from October 15 to December 7 each year.

Additionally, there are Medicare Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) that may be granted throughout the year to those who move to a new area, lose coverage or experience other scenarios that qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
