How Does the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club Work?

The Walgreens Prescription Savings Club is a membership program. When you pay the monthly fee, you get access to all the club's benefits. All you need to do is present your membership card.

Benefits of the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club

The club's most important benefit is the discount on prescription drugs. When you're a member, you get reduced prices on thousands of medications.

You'll also get dramatically reduced savings on value-priced generic drugs. Walgreens splits these medications into three tiers. In 2022, Tier 1 drugs cost $7.50 for a 30-day supply and $15 for a 90-day supply. Tier 2 medications are $10 for a 30-day supply and $20 for a 90-day supply. The most expensive category is Tier 3, which costs $15 for a 30-day supply and $30 for a 90-day supply.

Tier 1 includes blood pressure drugs, such as Atenolol, and diabetes medication, such as Glimepiride. Some Tier 2 medications include Lovastatin and Meloxicam. Tier 3 includes Fenofibrate, Enalapril-HCTZ and Alendronate. Availability, prices and doses can change; check the current list for updates.

Do you have pets? The Prescription Savings Club also offers discounts on certain common pet medications, including Omeprazole, Hydrocortisone and Amoxicillin.

To get these reduced prices, you must pay in cash. The Walgreens Rx discount card can't be combined with other prescription drug discounts, including those from your insurance. Once you use the card for an in-store prescription, you can order future prescriptions online through Walgreens and still receive the discount. Just make sure that your Savings Club is added to your account.

Get a 10% Bonus Credit at Walgreens

The Prescription Savings Club also features a bonus credit system. When you buy Walgreens and Nice! brand items in-store, 10% of the price gets added to your Savings Club account as a credit. You can use those credits to reduce the cost of future purchases.

To redeem credits, just hand your membership card to the cashier at the checkout. The credits can be applied to most in-store purchases, except:

  • Prescription medications
  • Alcohol
  • Milk products
  • Tobacco products
  • Prepaid cards and gift cards
  • Postage stamps

This system is typically most useful if you shop in-store frequently. Credits expire every 31 days.

Additional Discount Prescriptions at Walgreens

Membership in the Prescription Savings Club also comes with discounts on services such as:

  • Certain vaccinations
  • Compounded medications
  • Prescription nebulizers
  • Prescription diabetes testing supplies

Does the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club Work With Insurance?

The Walgreens Prescription Savings Club doesn't interfere with your insurance, and you don't need to be insured to join. However, you can't use the club membership benefits and your insurance benefits at the same time — you must choose one.

Is it worth joining the club if you already have insurance coverage or discounts for prescription drugs? That depends on your medication requirements. In some cases, the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club prices may be lower. If you have both, you have the opportunity to compare prices and use whichever program offers a bigger savings for each purchase.

Keep in mind that the Walgreens membership requires you to pay cash. If you need expensive, brand-name drugs, this could mean higher out-of-pocket costs. In addition, not all medications are included in the plan.

Walgreens is very transparent about prices; you can use the Walgreens drug price checker to see whether your medications are covered and how much they'll cost with the Prescription Savings Club.

Walgreens Prescription Savings Club: Types of Membership and Costs

The Walgreens Prescription Savings Club offers two membership types: individual and family. As of 2022, the individual membership costs $20 per year. A family membership is $35 for up to five people.

Who Is Eligible for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club?

Anyone who is 18 or older can sign up for the Prescription Savings Club. You can also buy an individual membership for a pet.

Family memberships are open to your immediate family, including any dependents who are younger than 23. Pets count toward your five-person limit.

If you're nearing Medicare eligibility, have loved ones with Medicare or currently have Medicare yourself and want to find out if more affordable drug coverage is available where you live, you can compare plans online today.
