The cost of Medicare Advantage plans can vary quite significantly, and you can sometimes find identical benefits at two very different price points.

Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to gather and compare Medicare Advantage quotes online or with the help of a licensed insurance agent.

In this review, we help you understand Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare Part C) plan costs, how to find the benefits you need and more.

Who Has the Best Medicare Advantage Plan of 2021?

Finding the best Medicare Advantage plan all depends on your definition of the word “best.”

In terms of price, it’s hard to beat Medicare Advantage plans from Cigna. But cost isn’t the only measure of a plan’s value, and we consider Medicare Advantage plans from other providers to be the best for other reasons, including:

How to Get Medicare Advantage Quotes

Most companies display price quotes for their plans on their website, which makes it easy to see the benefits, monthly premium and other costs associated with the plan. But there’s a few downsides to gathering quotes this way.

  • First, this method requires visiting the website of each insurance carrier separately and navigating your way toward the plan quotes. Some carriers require you to enter some basic information about yourself in order to see any quotes, which you may have to do multiple times.

  • Second, not every carrier makes plan quotes accessible online. Some require you to call them on the phone or enter your email address so they can email you some quotes.

  • Lastly, this method doesn’t ensure that you’ll see all of your opportunities. There may be some smaller insurance companies you aren’t aware of who offer Medicare Advantage plans in your area. If you don’t get to compare plans from those carriers, you might miss out on getting a better plan at a lower price.

An easier and more efficient way to gather Medicare Advantage quotes is to connect with a licensed insurance agent. The agent will be able to gather quotes for multiple different insurance carriers selling Medicare Advantage plans in your area and put them all in front of you at once for an easy side-by-side comparison.

Plus, the agent (sometimes also called a Medicare broker) will be able to go over the plan coverage with you to help you better understand the benefits and answer any questions you may have during the process. And once you decide on a plan, the agent can help you enroll if you’re eligible.

What Affects a Medicare Advantage Quote?

A Medicare Advantage quote can be affected by several different variables.

Type Of Plan

There are a few different types of Medicare Advantage plans that are often found at different price points. For example, a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan is generally more expensive than a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan, because PPO plans may typically be less restrictive about the network of providers who accept the plan.

Benefits Offered

It stands to reason that a Medicare Advantage plan offering dental care and prescription drug coverage could potentially cost more than a similar plan that does not provide those particular benefits.

Location

Medicare Advantage plan prices can differ greatly depending on where they are sold. The same plan sold by the same insurance company in one state may come at quite a different price in another location. However, you can only enroll in a plan that is sold in the area in which you live, so the geographic differences in prices shouldn’t factor into your plan search.

Other Costs

The monthly premium accounts for just part of the cost of a Medicare Advantage plan. There are also things like deductibles, copayments or coinsurance and out-of-pocket limits to consider. A plan with a high annual deductible may offer a lower monthly premium and vice versa. These other costs should always be considered whenever comparing plan quotes.

Insurance Company

Medicare Advantage plans are sold by private insurance companies, and some carriers may charge more or less than their competitors for similar looking plans.

Quality

Every year, Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rates the quality of all Medicare Advantage plans using the five-star system, with highly-rated plans receiving 4 or 5 stars, and lower-rated plans receiving 2 or fewer stars.

Are Medicare Advantage Plans Bad?

When you belong to a Medicare Advantage plan, you must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium in addition to any monthly premium required by the Medicare Advantage plan. And this double premium can cause concern for some beneficiaries.

However, many Medicare Advantage plans feature $0 monthly premiums, which means there’s no monthly charge on top of your Part B premium. And many plans that do charge a premium come loaded with dental, vision and prescription drug coverage, which are all things that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover.

Compare plans online to see if there’s a plan available near you that fits your health care needs and your budget.
