Finding Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Providers
Blue Cross Blue Shield plan members and people who are shopping for a BCBS or other Anthem Medicare Advantage plan can use an online “Find a Doctor” search tool to find participating dental providers.
You’ll be asked to enter a zip code and to select your plan. If you are not currently enrolled in a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, select “Browse a list of plans.” Then you may choose any plan to see the list of participating dental providers covered by that plan. You may have to select more than one plan to see a complete list of Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers in your area.
Once you have selected your location and plan, you may then sort the list of Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers by name, specialty, facility name or facility type.
Using Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Providers
The Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers that are accessible to you may depend on the type of Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in which you are enrolled.
- An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan will typically restrict you to seeing the dental providers that participate in the plan. If you visit a dental provider who is not part of your plan, you are unlikely to receive any coverage.
- A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plan can give you a little more freedom to visit dental providers outside of the plan’s network. You will maximize your savings by staying inside the network, but you may still have some of your care covered if received outside of the network.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Coverage
Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage is available through either a standalone dental plan that may be added to a health insurance plan or through a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C, covers the same benefits as Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) while typically also offering some additional coverage for things not included under Original Medicare. Dental care, along with vision care and prescription drug coverage, is among the most common extra benefits found in Medicare Advantage plans.
Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage may vary by plan, but common benefits include:
- Exams
- X-rays
- Cleanings
- Fillings
- Extractions
- Dentures and bridges
- Orthodontics
- Oral surgery
Preventive dental care is often covered in full. Some plans may offer a yearly allowance to put toward preventive care or other dental services.
Standalone dental plans may be a good option for those who have a health insurance plan that does not include any dental coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are popular among Medicare beneficiaries, as Original Medicare does not cover routine dental services and only offers very limited dental coverage at all.
Enrolling in Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Dental Plans
Medicare Advantage enrollment requires first being enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, and there are only certain times of the year in which you may enroll.
