How Much Do Nursing Homes Cost in San Antonio?

Despite having some of the lowest-cost nursing homes in the U.S., the average nursing home cost in Texas can still be relatively high at $5,000 to $6,000 per month.

Savings and other assets can go a long way toward paying for a nursing home, but it’s a hefty cost to pay entirely out of pocket. That’s why many people use some sort of insurance to help cover the cost of a nursing home.

Does Medicare Cover Nursing Homes in San Antonio?

Medicare helps cover inpatient stays at skilled nursing facilities, which is similar to a nursing home, but there are some important differences you should be aware of.

Many nursing homes are long-term care facilities and are typically meant for people to live permanently as they age. Skilled nursing facilities are typically for short-term care and are meant for people to stay on a temporary basis and receive care and assistance while recovering from a hospital stay for an injury, illness or operation.

The first 20 days of a stay at a skilled nursing facility are covered by Medicare Part A, and then daily copayments are required thereafter. These copayments may be covered by a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plan.

Some Medicare Supplement plans can also cover your Part A deductible and other out-of-pocket costs, which could end up saving you a lot of money if you need extensive medical care or require a lengthy inpatient stay in a hospital or nursing facility.

You can compare Medigap plans online to see what options are available where you live.

Long-Term Care Insurance for Nursing Homes in San Antonio

One common way some people pay for a nursing home is with long-term care insurance. This type of standalone insurance policy can pay for room and board, meals and care administered in a nursing home.

The level of benefits you might get with a long-term care insurance plan may depend on the amount of coverage you purchase. To use your benefits, you’ll likely need a doctor to determine that you need assistance with certain things like eating, bathing or dressing, which are often referred to as “activities of daily living.”

Medicaid Coverage of Nursing Homes in San Antonio

Another way nursing home residents often pay for their stay is through Medicaid. If you qualify for Medicaid and are shown to need the type of care that is consistent with a nursing home, you may be able to have your room and board, meals and care covered.

You may be required to forfeit a portion of your income to do so, as Medicaid allows nursing home beneficiaries to keep just a modest monthly allowance for personal spending.

You may also be able to use Medicaid long-term care benefits in your own home should you choose to age in place.
